  • Derek Carr #4 of the Oakland Raiders throws a pass in the first quarter against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium

Oakland Raiders running back Latavius Murray is reportedly unlikely to play against the San Diego Chargers due to a foot injury, but the Silver and Black's leading rusher is still hopeful he will be able to suit up Sunday.

Offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said the Raiders are trying to modify Murray's footwear in a way that could allow him to take the field in Week 5. They are working with his shoes and things like that to help him in that regard.

Murray, who leads Oakland with 172 rushing yards on 40 carries with three rushing touchdowns, wore a protective boot on Tuesday and Wednesday but was out of the boot on Thursday.

The Raiders have gotten it done late in games with Carr leading a TD drive and throwing the game-winning 2-point conversion with 52 seconds left in the opener at New Orleans, then adding a go-ahead TD pass to Michael Crabtree with 2:12 to go last week at Baltimore. Richard went 75 yards for a touchdown on his first National Football League carry and has 17 carries for 144 yards and a terrific 8.5 per carry average.

If Murray is indeed out for the Raiders (3-1) against the Chargers (1-3), the rookie tandem of DeAndre Washington and Jalen Richard will split the load.

"I get so fired up that I have to just calm myself down. You just have to be ready when your number gets called". He's in there with the O-line, day in and day out, working [offensive line] coach [Mike] Tice.

Richard has been splitting time on special teams, doubling on kickoff returns and punt returns.

The San Diego Chargers are in deep trouble at 1-3 and head coach Mike McCoy is hanging on for his job after the Chargers fumbled the ball twice inside their own 31 yard line in the final seven minutes last Sunday to blow a 13 point lead to the Saints. "I don't think we're setting any limitations or putting them in any corner or any box right now". Walford sat out practice Wednesday after not finishing out Week 4.

The Raiders injuries are starting to mount at the quarter mark of the 2016 season, as the team also placed tight end Lee Smith and linebacker Ben Heeney on injured reserve this week.
