Ryan Zinke Reportedly Selected For Secretary Of The Interior

14 December, 2016, 05:13 | Author: Evan Mason

Zinke is an ex-Navy SEAL commander, and now serves on the House Armed Services and Natural Resources committees, CNN reports.

Politico reported earlier on Tuesday that Trump had expanded his search to include Zinke and U.S. Republican Representative Raul Labrador of Idaho as well as McMorris Rodgers.

"What I would expect (from Zinke) is to extract at any cost and to ignore environmental protections in order to further his political ambitions".

The Republican lawmaker visited Trump Tower in NY on Monday, where he said he discussed national security, sportsmen's rights and other topics during a closed-door meeting with Trump.

"President-elect Donald Trump and I had a very positive meeting where we discussed a wide range of Montana priorities", Zinke told The Billings Gazette in a statement afterward. "I would hate to have to think I would have to pick up and move to Washington, D.C.to participate in something like that". Zinke was the top Republican prospect to challenge Sen.

There was no official confirmation from the Trump transition team or Zinke.

"That means protecting access to public lands, ensuring our forests and prairies are indeed managed for multiple use and not just resource extraction, and respecting that wild places and public lands are core American values that he'll need to protect for all citizens." he said. He has likewise pushed for full financing of the Land and Water Conservation Fund, a high need for outside gatherings. A deep rooted seeker and angler, the 55-year-old Zinke has protected community to government lands despite the fact that he oftentimes votes against tree huggers. He is also favored by some Republican leaders for a 2018 Senate run. While he supported subsidizing renewable energy programs and climate change legislation before being elected to the House, during a 2014 debate he said of climate change, "It's not a hoax, but it's not proven science either". He said he learned the importance of hard work and character from his grandmother, a one-room schoolhouse teacher from Richey.

Zinke, a Whitefish native, graduated from the University of OR with a geology degree. He has master's degrees in business finance and global leadership from the University of San Diego. He led missions into Iraq, earning two Bronze Star medals for meritorious service in a combat zone.

Zinke recently released a book about his 23-year career as a U.S. Navy SEAL. Hundreds of pages of the book were redacted by the U.S. Department of Defense because of concerns releasing that information could jeopardize U.S. security.
