Donald Trump Signs Executive Orders on Inauguration Day

  • Guarded The election event will be heavily guarded and under immense security- including this bullet-proof parade stand. But that hasn't calmed the nerves of some CNN viewers

But the 45th President of the US trumped those expectations with a speech that was resonant of campaign rhetoric rather than one that should have been a vision statement for a united future under his leadership.

President Donald Trump had a new message for the nation on Sunday during the swearing-in ceremony for his senior staff, which included his son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

Trump, a Republican, won the presidential election after a very hard campaign against Democrat Hillary Clinton.

The White House says Trump will discuss immigration and NAFTA reforms with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto on January 31.He also plans to meet soon with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. During the presidential campaign, Trump said bad trade deals had hurt employment in America.

Aerial photographs showed that the crowds for Trump's inauguration were smaller than in 2009.

Trump thanked former President Barack Obama for a smooth transition, and he delivered some nice lines at the end of his short speech about dreaming big and a "new national pride".

Instead of appealing to the Democratic Party to work on bipartisanship, Trump blamed all the problems in our country on the previous administration.

Surveys suggest that Trump's popularity on the national level is on the negative side of the spectrum, but today's tough talk came as music to the ears of his supporters.

"We stand at the birth of a new millennium", he said at the U.S. Capitol after his swearing-in, "ready to unlock the mysteries of space, to free the earth from the miseries of disease, and to harness the energies, industries and technologies of tomorrow".

"Someday, our children, and our children's children, will look at us in the eye and they'll ask us, did we do all that we could when we had the chance to deal with this problem and leave them a cleaner, safe, more stable world?" They are generally optimistic and aimed at building broad support inside and outside Washington for the new president's vision. How he will seek friendship and reinforce old alliances when he has fundamentally challenged the premise on which they are based is hard to discern but the contradictions are typical of Trump, and the historic nature of the occasion did nothing to temper it.

"It couldn't have been easy for either man to be civil to the other after the election", said Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia. "It's about country, our country, and it's about serving the American people", he said.

"Yet imagine how much worse it could have been had No. 44 and No. 45 feuded day after day", Sabato said. Mario Ritter was the editor. "We are transferring power from Washington DC and giving it back to you the people. Write to us in the Comments Section and share your views on our Facebook Page.
