DXB´s annual traffic in 2016 totaled 83,654,250 passengers, compared to 78,014,838 in 2015, up 7.2 per cent.

The Persian Gulf hub expects to lure 89 million travelers in 2017, it said Tuesday, a 6.4 per cent gain that would be the weakest in 10 years, excluding 2014, when runway repairs limited takeoffs and landings for 2 1/2 months.

According to The Associated Press, Griffiths is the CEO of the world's busiest airport for global travel, which saw an astounding 83.6 million passengers in 2016.

In December, the emirate's airport registered 7.7 million passengers, a performance boosted by the holiday season.

In 2016, new airlines, such as Nepal Airlines and Rossiya, started operations in the airport. They hope to have 89 million passengers in 2017.

India is the largest single destination served by Dubai, followed by Saudi Arabia and the U.K. Despite the increase in traffic, growth slowed slightly past year. Plus, flydubai, Emirates and other companies launched eleven new destinations from DXB. Saudi Arabia took second spot with 6,086,158 (+11.3%), marginally overtaking the United Kingdom at 6,061,342 (+6.7%). "Our DXB Plus programme will see a series of new and unique initiatives and technologies introduced at the airport to make DXB not only the busiest but also the world's best worldwide airport", said Griffiths.

India remains the top destination country for flights taking off from Dubai, due also to the capacity increase and launching of new services by airlines Spice Jet, Jet Airways, Air India and others. In terms of destination cities connected to DXB, London took the top spot from Doha with 3,751,596 passengers, while Doha clocked 2,999,762 passengers, followed closely by Mumbai with 2,357,103 passengers. The average number of passengers per flight during December was 224, a +7.1% gain over December 2015.

Aircraft movements in 2016 reached 418,220 compared to 406,705 in 2015, up 2.8 per cent.

According to Paul Griffiths, Dubai Airports' CEO, the forecast points to DXB having 89 million passengers in 2017, retaining the leadership in terms of worldwide passengers, and closing the gap to Atlanta, United States, and Beijing, China, in overall traffic.
