The recent updates tell about the tapeworm in the fish which can infect your health to a major context.

A study published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) this week states that wild salmon caught in Alaska could be infected with Japanese broad tapeworm-a parasite previously believed to only infect fish in Asia.

Scientists say the tapeworm was first recognized as a human parasite in 1986.

It has been been reported in 2,000 illnesses in Japan and other parts of Asia and is known to affect humans who eat infected fish in eastern Russian Federation and Japan.

Officials are reporting the re-emergence of a Japanese broad tapeworm in wild pink salmon.

By observing the musculature and the internal organs of the fish under a magnifying glass, the researchers discovered larvae measuring up to 15 millimeters long. After gene sequencing, it was found out that those larvae belonged to the Japanese broad tapeworms.

Compared with an infection resulting from D. latum, "we think this Japanese version would not be any different, although very little is actually known about this variant of tapeworms", said Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine who was not involved in the new study. Most infected humans have few if any recognizable symptoms - some may feel slight nausea or abdominal discomfort - though in rare cases the infection can turn serious.

"In 2012, a Japanese man with a fondness for chilled salmon came down with what physicians described as a "watery" bout of gastrointestinal distress".

Scientists also warned that the problem may spread if nothing is done about it.

An increased popularity of eating raw fish and "global importation" has caused the reemergence of the tapeworm, the study concluded.

Since salmon is packed and transported on ice, but not frozen, the larvae of the Japanese tapeworm might have survived the trip.
