Mexican drug kingpin 'El Chapo' to face arraignment in federal court

21 January, 2017, 00:41 | Author: Eddie Kim

The epic quest to bring Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman to the United States culminated Friday in a NY courtroom, where the feared former leader of the Sinaloa cartel appeared in a navy jail uniform to face charges that could keep him behind bars for the rest of his life.

Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera was extradited to the U.S.by Mexican authorities Thursday, the Justice Department announced.

Guzman faces a total of 17 drug trafficking, murder, money laundering and kidnapping charges accrued over a criminal career spanning four decades, and appeared in a Brooklyn court this afternoon to be arraigned on his USA charges. She added that the U.S.is grateful to Mexico's government for helping to secure Guzman's extradition.

Guzman is charged in six separate indictments throughout the United States.

El Chapo has eluded law enforcement for decades, as William F. Sweeney, the assistant director in charge of the FBI's New York Field Office, told reporters.

USA dollar stung by pound's big gain, Trump's comments
Recent buying in gold, and maybe bonds, can be attributed questions about the pace of interest-rate hikes from the US Fed in 2017. Meanwhile, North American stock markets were lower as the S&P/TSX composite index slipped 14.44 points to 15,464.85 in Toronto.

These conditions stray far from what Guzman was accustomed to, with reports of catered food and liquor delivered consistently to his cell at the Puente Grande federal prison in Mexico.

The billions in profits were then "laundered back to Mexico", according to the court documents. He has been indicted in at least seven U.S. federal courts.

Alberto Elias Beltran, Mexico's assistant attorney general for global affairs, denied the extradition had anything to do with Trump's inauguration and said one day Guzman would face justice at home. The US attorney's office there has substantial experience prosecuting worldwide drug cartel cases and was once led by outgoing US attorney general Loretta Lynch. Guzman has fought extradition since his recapture a year ago.

Guzman stood unshackled before a federal judge and pleaded not guilty to 17 counts covering almost a quarter-century of drug trafficking, including the operation of a continuing criminal enterprise.

The extradition of the drug lord came on the eve of Donald Trump's swearing-in as president.

It says Guzman and other members of the Sinaloa cartel employed hit men who carried out murders, kidnappings and acts of torture. "Most of you probably haven't seen any evidence like that either", federal public defender Michael Schneider told reporters outside the court.
