Senate Likely to Confirm Two of Trump's Nominees on Inauguration Day

Schumer said Thursday that Democrats would clear the way for confirmation votes on President-elect Donald Trump's security team on Inauguration Day, but he threatened to hold up most of the other nominees. Democrats will insist on full debate on the Senate floor on those nominees, Schumer said.

There is very little Senate Democrats can do at this point to actually defeat Trump's cabinet nominees.

The Senate will vote on retired Gen. James Mattis to be defense secretary and retired Gen. John Kelly to lead the Department of Homeland Security.

Still, having two or three nominees confirmed when Mr. Trump is sworn in Friday would be far fewer than the seven confirmed on both President Obama's first day in 2009 and President George W. Bush's first day in 2001.

However, Democrats balked at what they described as efforts by Republicans, who hold a 52-seat majority in the 100-seat Senate, to jam through nominations before Trump's selections had filed all of their financial and ethics paperwork or answered every question submitted during the confirmation process.

"It speaks volumes that the Democratic leadership won't work with us for the continuity of government", Spicer told reporters.

Schumer called for an investigation of the healthcare stock investments of Representative Tom Price, the nominee to head the Department of Health and Human Services.

"Senators on both sides of the aisle have expressed support for the president-elect's key national security nominees", Schumer said, adding that Democrats would also at least start debate on Central Intelligence Agency director nominee Rep. Mike Pompeo.

Most of Trump's nominees will eventually be confirmed.

"The more we learned about the nominees, the more important a thorough fair process became", Schumer said. He said "there are a good number of members" who want to make statements about Pompeo or ask him questions, but predicted a vote on Monday if it did not take place Friday. "Senate Republicans did not want to have a full debate on the merits of these nominees in committee, but they should be prepared to do so on the floor of the United States Senate".
