A class-action suit has been filed against Fiat Chrysler by London law firm Siskinds.

German transport minister Alexander Dobrindt reportedly said at the weekend FCA vehicles breaking emissions rules should be recalled and taken off the streets.

His Italian counterpart Graziano Delrio, forgetting perhaps that companies are more-or-less separate to the state, called the suggestion "unacceptable" and adding: "You don't give orders to a sovereign nation like Italy".

A DfT spokesman said: "We are pressing Fiat Chrysler UK for more information about emissions from the 3700 Jeep Grand Cherokee cars that have been registered in the UK".

Fiat-Chrysler is under investigation by the US Justice Department over its alleged failure to disclose software that violated emissions standards.

On Jan. 12, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) accused Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) of outfitting certain vehicles with software created to allow them to emit illegally high levels of unsafe nitrogen oxides.

Last week, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a notice of violation to FCA and FCA US for alleged violations of the Clean Air Act relating to NOx emissions from diesel vehicles - model year 2014, 2015 and 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Ram 1500 trucks with three-litre diesel engines.

After Italy rejected Germany's allegations previous year, Berlin asked the European Commission to mediate in the dispute.

British authorities said they will carry out tests on Fiat Chrysler's Jeep Grand Cherokee model, in response to allegations the carmaker deliberately misled regulators over diesel cars emissions. However, Rome rejected the Commission's allegations that are kept on dragging its feet in the case, as it always acknowledges to demands from Brussels in a reliable way.

An EU source stated that testing performed on one Fiat 500X vehicle at the EU's own automobile testing laboratory north of Milan showed suspicious emissions habits. A spokesperson could not be reached to comment specifically on the Siskinds action.
