Trump inauguration deepens rift with China over Taiwan

In an apparent upturn in relations between Beijing and the incoming United States administration - President Xi Jinping used a speech in Geneva on Wednesday to say China will build a new model of relations with the U.S. as part of its creation of a "circle of friends" around the world.

China on Wednesday called on the U.S.to bar a Taiwanese delegation from attending Donald Trump's Friday inauguration, underscoring concerns that the incoming president could seek to redefine relations among Beijing, Taipei and Washington.

A demonstrator holds flags of Taiwan and the United States in support of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen during an stop-over after her visit to Latin America in Burlingame, California, US, January 14, 2017.

As security barricades go up in the USA capital ahead of massive protests against the incoming president, a different sense of trepidation is growing overseas of a looming clash over trade between China and the U.S., with dire consequences for the global economy.

Well, Hua will be disappointed to know that the United States has made no move to stop the Taiwanese delegation team - which is led by Yu Shyi-kun, the former chairman of Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) - from attending the inauguration.

Trump has vowed to impose tariffs on products from China during his presidential campaign.

"Taiwan-US relations have a lengthy history and have made significant progress in recent years", the statement said, according to AP.

Hua made no mention of the long-running dispute over Taiwan, the self-governing island that China claims as its own territory. China considers the small island 80km (110 miles) off its southeastern coast to be a breakaway province with no right to any kind of diplomatic contacts with other countries.

"There hasn't been any leader with such a narrow mind in all Chinese dynasties", added Yu, referring to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

"If Trump reneges on the one-China policy after taking office, the Chinese people will demand the government to take revenge".

Sidestepping recent disputes over Taiwan and regional security, China said Thursday that "important progress" has been made in its relationship with the USA under President Barack Obama and the two countries should move forward as partners rather than competitors.

Trump is to be sworn into office on Friday.

"Everything is under negotiation, including 'One China, '" he said. Last week, he said in a newspaper interview that Washington's "one-China policy" under which it recognized Beijing in 1979 was open to negotiation, and earlier questioned why the US should be bound by such an approach without China offering incentives.
