Trump Taps Jets Owner Woody Johnson to Serve as Ambassador to UK

20 January, 2017, 01:01 | Author: Jan Cross

With Jets owner Woody Johnson set to become Donald Trump's ambassador to the United Kingdom, let's fondly remember that time Trump ripped Johnson.

Speaking at a Washington luncheon, the President-elect introduced a guest as "sitting next to the ambassador Woody Johnson, going to Saint James".

Johnson initially supported Jeb Bush's presidential campaign, serving as the former Florida governor's finance chairman.

Until Johnson is confirmed by the Senate, Lew Lukens will serve as interim ambassador, succeeding President Obama's last ambassador to the U.K., Matthew Barzun.

It remains to be seen how Woody Johnson's appointment to the United Kingdom post will affect NFL's increased presence overseas, particularly in Europe.

Johnson's brother, Christopher Wold Johnson, 12 years his junior, reportedly could step into a prominent role in the organization.

Johnson had joined Trump's fundraising team in May 2016.

He bought the New York Jets in 2000 for $635m (£515m) and also runs an investment firm, the Johnson Company Inc, which was established in 1978.
