Broos had to deal with a host of refusals from key players to accept call-ups for the Cup of Nations but a new squad defied expectations to reach the final, where they beat Egypt 2-1 in Libreville.

Cameroon ended their 15-year wait to lift the Africa Cup of Nations after beating Egypt 2-1 in Sunday night's final in Gabon.

Mohamed Elneny gave Egypt the lead when he fired into the roof of the net midway through the first half, but Cameroon struck back shortly before the hour mark through Nicolas N'Koulou's header.

Cameroon had undergone a major overhaul of their team under coach Hugo Broos and then saw several players put club before country and pull out before the start of the tournament.

This set up an exciting finish as Cameroon continued to pressurise the Egyptians and looked the more likely to find a victor.

According to the BBC, this was supposed to be the worst Cameroon team in a generation. Egypt have won seven titles, including three straight from 2006 to 2010, while Cameroon won the tournament in 1984, 1988, 2000 and 2002.

El-Hadary made his full Egypt debut in 1996.

"My players were exhausted and Burkina were better than us and so then you play to get to penalties and see what happens", said Egypt coach Hector Cuper.

Egypt, seeking a record-extending eighth African Nations Cup, have won the past three continental tournaments for which they have qualified and have the battle-hardened feel of a team that knows the ropes. "We are a good generation that ensures a good future for Egyptian football".

Cuper's own career has featured numerous disappointments in finals, most notably in successive seasons in the UEFA Champions League with Valencia in 2000 and 2001.

So it is Cameroon who will dictate what sort of game we get.
