  • Karina Vetrano
                                     CBS New York

The body of Karina Vetrano was found in a park in Howard Beach not far from her home.

Investigators say the accused's DNA was found at the crime scene, including under the victim's fingernails.

"I'm literally shaking right now", a close friend of Vetrano's told the New York Daily News.

The slaying was the second of three murders of female runners in nine days last summer.

"A savage murderer. He f--ing murdered my daughter, my lovely innocent daughter".

The NYPD had developed a DNA profile of Vetrano's killer nearly immediately using material collected from her cell phone and her body - but they ran up against a roadblock, CNN affiliate WABC reported. The woman's parents became anxious after their daughter failed to answer her cell phone, and contacted the authorities.

Chanel Lewis, 20, was taken into custody Saturday night, according to the New York Police Department. A resident living near the park called 911 in May reporting him as a "suspicious person".

Lewis was taken into custody over the weekend, and police say he confessed.

"You gotta remember, Karina helped us identify this person", Boyce said, referring to evidence that was processed more than six months ago when Vetrano's body was discovered.

The man allegedly volunteered a DNA sample and the results came back Saturday, sources say.

He would regularly join her running but could not on the day of murder because of a back injury. "That's how we were able to bring the profile up and that's how we made the link".

Lewis was expected to be arraigned late Sunday or Monday in Queens, said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.

Authorities believe a man killed Marcotte and he may have been cut, scraped or bruised while she tried to fight him off.

Lewis said he attacked the 30-year-old because he "was angry", the New York Post reports. The following day, Russo spotted Lewis again, and cops arrived to question him.

"We would never tire, we would never stop", Phil Vetrano told WABC-TV. We didn't expect to know when it was going to happen.
