  • Sriharikota ISRO is attempting a new world record by launching 104 satellites in a single flight of PSLVC 37 from Sriharikota Andhra Pradesh

India's space agency now holds the record for launching 104 satellites into orbit at the same time, while using only one rocket. This is after the country has made history by successfully launching 104 satellites using only a single rocket.

After the launch, PM Narendra Modi congratulated ISRO team for successful launch of 104 satellites: space agency chief A S Kiran Kumar. On June 22 2016, it had placed 20 satellites in orbit in a single shot which gave it confidence to raise the number of satellites it can fly.

ISRO's PSLV C37 lifts off from Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota on February 15, 2017, making this the launch vehicle's 39th journey to space. "The successful launch is yet another feather in the cap of India's ambitious space programme that has earned a reputation of offering a reliable low cost alternative to existing worldwide players", it said.

The co-passenger satellites comprised 101 nano satellites, one each from Israel, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the UAE and 96 from the U.S., as well as two nano satellites from India. In Wednesday's mission, the total weight of all the 104 satellites flown was 1,378 kg.

Marking the 16th PSLV flight in "XL" configuration, the latest launch includes 101 nanosatellites, one each from Kazakhstan, Israel, The Netherlands, Switzerland, and the UAE. It established India's credibility as a space power and has translated into tangible economic benefits when it comes to the big business of satellite launches.

The launch's success has solidified India as a player in private space market as the demand continues to grow for telecommunications services. The article mentions that according to the data released by the World Economic Forum in 2016, "the US' space budget in 2013 was $39.3 billion, China $6.1 billion, Russian Federation $5.3 billion, Japan $3.6 billion and India $1.2 billion". India can undertake hardly one to two launch missions in one year, while China in 2011 undertook 19 rocket launches, thereby putting 21 satellites in space. "And third, India is under pressure to compete with China and refuses to lag behind", it reads.

Most of the satellites were from the United States, BBC News reported. Watching each of these little guys with their own individual purposes flood the sky and kick the country's space program into overdrive is just as neat as it sounds.
