Indian shares ended on a flat note on Friday, even as IT stocks posted widespread gains for the second day running.

In terms of broader markets, the BSE mid-cap index fell by 0.28 per cent, whereas the small-cap index rose by 0.14 per cent.

The NSE 50-share Nifty was up 4.20 points, or 0.05 per cent, at 8,772.50 at 1100 hrs.

Key benchmark indices continued to trade flat, with Sensex down 7 points and Nifty up 4 points in late morning trade after a tepid opening as investors awaited outcome of two-day monetary policy committee meeting later today amid bearish Asian cues.

In the 30-share Sensex heatmap, 20 ended with losses and 10 turned higher.

The rupee too went past its three-month high in early trade today to 66.95 against the dollar.

On the other hand, the S&P BSE healthcare index declined by 134.32 points, the automobile index slipped by 104.15 points, and the oil and gas index fell by 90.87 points.

Over the past four sessions, the index had risen 783.32 points.

However, SunPharma rose by 0.92 per cent, ITC 0.63 per cent, Tata Steel 0.62 per cent, Cipla 0.58 per cent, Asianpaints 0.53 per cent, GAIL 0.51 per cent.

Top gainers in the Sensex-30 pack: Adani Ports (up 2.5 per cent), TCS (up 2.4 per cent), Infosys (up 2.1 per cent), Tata Steel (up 1.7 per cent) and NTPC (up 1 per cent).

Shanghai Composite closed 0.12 per cent lower while Japan's Nikkei was down 0.35 per cent and Hong Kong shed 0.07 per cent.
