And playing John F. Kennedy is none other than Michael C. Hall.

The first season of The Crown was received much critical acclaim: Claire Foy, who stars as Queen Elizabeth II, took home the accolade for Lead Drama Actor at the SAG Awards and the series also snagged the Golden Globe for Best TV Drama.

He's certainly the first who once played a serial killer for eight seasons.

The news of Hall and Balfour's casting comes at a time when there's already a real glut of Kennedy-themed entertainment; Natalie Portman was recently nominated for an Oscar for playing the title role in Jackie, while the Reelz channel will premiere The Kennedys-After Camelot, a miniseries starring Katie Holmes as Jackie, in April. The actor was nominated for five Emmys for the role and won a Golden Globe for his performance in 2010. (Deadline also confirmed that rumor that Matthew Goode had been cast as photographer Tony Armstrong-Jones - aka Lord Snowdon - who would eventually become Princess Margaret's husband.) So, what does all of this tell us about Season 2?

Hall is most well-known for his role on HBO's Six Feet Under and Showtime's Dexter.

The Crown is now streaming on Netflix.

Season two is now in production and will usher in the 1960s after Her Majesty's Armed Forces fight an illegal war in Egypt. You can probably expect this meeting to be recreated in the show! It ends with the downfall of her third Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan, after a scandal. He joins the list of almost a dozen actors who have played JFK in movies and TV, including Martin Sheen, Patrick Dempsey, Bruce Greenwood, Greg Kinnear, James Marsden and Rob Lowe.
