Electronic devices to be banned from US-bound flights over 'terror threat'

21 March, 2017, 00:48 | Author: Jan Cross

Royal Jordanian said it was following "instructions from the concerned USA departments" and would ban "laptops, cameras, DVD players, and electronic games" from the flight cabins.

No American carriers are impacted by the ban, which applies to devices larger than a mobile phone.

Prohibited devices include laptops, tablets, cameras, DVD players and electronic games, according to the report, all of which must be placed in checked baggage.

Airlines have reportedly been given 96 hours to comply with the request. We've reached out to Royal Jordanian and other Middle Eastern-based airlines for further details. It's not clear yet which countries might be the target of the restrictions Royal Jordanian Airlines referred to.

A spokesman for the International Air Transport Association, which represents international carriers including Royal Jordanian, said they were not informed of the ban and were working to get additional information from US authorities.

A spokesman for the US Department of Homeland Security declined to comment. The airlines were informed via a confidential email distributed by the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA), which The Guardian suggests was supposed to be kept quiet, perhaps prompting Royal Jordanian to delete its tweet.

Royal Jordanian Airlines didn't specify which USA departments instructed this ban, or specify whether the ban was temporary or permanent.

The new rule is expected to be announced by the Homeland Security Department on Tuesday, local time, and cover about a dozen foreign carriers. BuzzFeed News has reached out to other Middle Eastern and African airlines, and will update this article as responses come in.

A tweet sent by Royal Jordanian about the policy has since been removed.

"This announcement is effective starting with March 21, 2017, and the instructions will be applied on the New York, Chicago, Detroit and Montreal flights, the last two destinations served by a combined flight", reads the announcement, which was saved by both news outlets before it was deleted.
