  • Israel reportedly launches strike on Syria as tensions rise

Israel's military chief says Israel has concluded that Hezbollah's top military commander was killed in Syria a year ago by rivals within the Shi'ite militant group.

"These reports corresponded with the information we have and with our assessment", Eisenkot said in a speech in central Israel.

A senior Israeli security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said last week that Badreddine and Iran were at odds over "how to wage the Syrian campaign" and a meeting was arranged near an airport where a Hizbullah security official shot him dead. Hezbollah announced that "artillery bombardment" caused his death, while media reports blamed Israel and Sunni terrorist groups in the area.

"Those findings show to what degree relations between Hezbollah and its patron Iran are tense and complex".

The anti-aircraft missile was sacked by the Syrian military after Israeli fighter jets bombed "targets" in Syria.

Badreddine was a key suspect in the 2005 assassination in Beirut of Lebanese ex-premier Rafiq Hariri.

Mustafa Badreddine was killed in an explosion in the Syrian capital in May 2016.

IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Gadi Eizenkot, addressing the changeover ceremony for the head of the IDF northern command, also on Sunday, said Hezbollah continues with its efforts to acquire risky and accurate weapons meant to harm the Israeli home front. Israel continues to conduct strikes against Hezbollah in Syria and Lebanon to prevent Iranian arms transfers to the group.

On March 21, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the country would continue airstrikes against convoys carrying weapons for Hezbollah on Syria's territory.

Israel also used its Arrow interceptor to destroy what was believed to have been a Russian-made SA 5 missile.

On March 17, the Israeli air force carried out a raid against several targets in Syria.

Russian involvement in Syria has complicated Israel's actions. "There is a policy and it will not change", said Netanyahu. That strike led to Moscow summoning Israel's ambassador to Russia, Gary Koren, to protest the incident.
