Meals on Wheels Donations Spike After Donald Trump's Budget Outline

President Trump's skinny budget may starve the Meals on Wheels program for 2.4 million low-income seniors.

The speakers all said they are concerned about proposed cuts to the Community Development Block Grant Program, which funds portions of Meals on Wheels and other programs for things like affordable housing, infrastructure investments, and economic development. Past year it served 2.4 million people. That number would increase dramatically if the president's budget plans are approved.

Olsen expressed concern, though, with comments by the federal budget director about the viability of home-delivered meal programs, which could result in further funding cuts that could hurt NY programs. We will also be searching for additional funding sources. "To the best of my knowledge so far, we don't have any definite planned cuts that we've been informed of yet".

"Exercising. We do a lot of that, which I do", Stephens said. "I will say that while Meals on Wheels America and local Meals on Wheels programs are seeing an uptick in giving, it does not replace federal funding". Should Congress approve Trump's federal budget that will slash Meals on Wheels funding?

While no cuts have happened yet, Bertolette explains that it's valuable to the Meals on Wheels organization that so many people are speaking out in support of this public-private partnership and demanding that Meals on Wheels remain a funding priority.

According to The Washington Post, Mulvaney was referring to the Community Development Block Grant, not Meals on Wheels.

The target? Meals on Wheels.

The benefit grew with longer use, and was 25 percent the second year, said Sabatine, who consults for Amgen and other drugmakers. The man-made antibody helps in cutting down the risk of cardiovascular and heart diseases related death in people by 20%.

Community Bridges Chief Executive Officer Raymon Cancino said the numbers are worrisome. Clearly, federal funding for the national program office isn't the linchpin for its success.

The other argument flung against Meals on Wheels is that it is a program that doesn't work.

The cuts could mean a hit of $200,000. "I don't want to tell seniors they're not going to get a meal". You have lived your life in the ivory tower of the board room with, I can only believe, little or no contact with the real world or with that large segment of the population wondering where the next meal will come from.

"With one, a driver heard some moaning through the door", says Pam Almeida, director of the local Meals on Wheels for the last 18 years. Jacobson says every person who gets a meal is given the opportunity to donate to that meal and she says many do.

She said she hopes numbers like that, will help lawmakers see the importance and value of the program and people they help.

The program enables seniors to stay in their homes: 87 percent of those surveyed said it helps them to feel safer, and 83 percent said it has improved their health.
