Nearly Half Of Canadians Want Illegal Border Crossers Deported

If the pace of asylum-seekers keeps up, it will mean upwards of 33,000 refugee claims filed in Canada this year - nearly 40% higher than 2016.

Canada hasn't reached a record number of asylum seekers this year, but so far in 2017 there has been an increase when compared to statistics over the past few years.

Canadians' view of illegal immigration mirrors that of their neighbors in the U.S., where a similar Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted earlier this week showed 50 percent support for deportations.

While the RCMP arrests illegal border crossers, how many of them actually go on to lodge asylum claims in Canada is unclear.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has tried to draw a contrast between himself and Trump on immigration.

Other Canadians told Reuters it's one thing to welcome immigrants who come legally, but another matter when they decide to put themselves at the front of the line and enter illegally.

"This is definitely not specific to the incoming US administration", he said.

Studies have shown, however, that immigrant communities typically have lower crime rates than the overall USA population. Numerous bill's critics testified Wednesday that they approved of Geren's changes but still opposed the overall measure.

Yet not all Canadians are supportive of Trudeau's immigration stance.

By contrast, 2,145 people crossed at official land border ports of entry and made refugee claims during the same period, including 1,085 in Quebec, 905 in Ontario, 80 in Manitoba, and 35 each in Alberta and British Columbia. Additionally, 41 percent said that these migrants crossing from the USA would make Canada "less safe".

Growing numbers of asylum-seekers are coming to Canada in the wake of the election of US President Donald Trump, who has pledged to crack down on refugees and undocumented immigrants.

The Canadian population is also unhappy with the PM, as 46 percent say they are dissatisfied with how Trudeau has handled the migrant flow. "These guys are jumping the border". "People understood the reception in Canada was not going to be as welcoming as in the past", said Rehaag, who specializes in immigration and refugee law.

And the number of illegal immigrants crossing into Canada could spike as temperatures warm, according to Brian Lee Crowley, head of the Macdonald-Laurier Institute for Public Policy in Ottawa, Ontario.

In January, a separate Ipsos poll found that 59 percent of Canadians approved of Trudeau, while 41 percent disapproved.
