California governor declares end to drought emergency

Gov. Jerry Brown lifted the drought emergency for California on Friday after several years of below-normal rain seasons.

"This drought emergency is over, but the next drought could be around the corner", he said in a statement.

Governor Jerry Brown declared an end to California's drought Friday, following an extremely wet winter and now wet spring.

California's drought ran from the 2012 to 2016 water years, with 2012 to 2015 being the state's driest years on record. "We know that another drought will come, we just don't know when, so we need Angelenos to keep the conservation mindset that has grown stronger in recent years and keep using water efficiently".

Stay with KCRA for updates. This plan builds on that success to establish long-term conservation measures.

While we fully support the plan's proposal to extend water planning requirements to more agricultural water suppliers, it keeps intact almost all of the draft's flawed ideas for improving agricultural water efficiency, including a misguided fixation on getting agricultural water districts (which supply irrigation water to farms) to complete complicated water budgets.

For the winter months measured as December, January and February by meteorologists, California had its second wettest winter on record.

Technical assistance, financial incentives and standards to guide water suppliers' efforts to detect and fix leaks. The damage will continue to affect the state for years, the governor stated.

"Metropolitan (Water District of Southern California) helped set the water-saving example through our historic investment in turf removal and long-term wisdom of investments in resource management", said MWD General Manager Jeff Kightlinger in a statement. The company employs more than 6,700 dedicated professionals who provide regulated and market-based drinking water, wastewater and other related services to an estimated 15 million people in 47 states and Ontario, Canada.

Californians can't hose off sidewalks and driveways or irrigate lawns within 48 hours of rain.

One year ago, more than 74 percent of the state was in at least "severe drought", with more than 31 percent gripped by "exceptional drought", the most dire of the five drought classifications.
