Chernova was also stripped of her bronze from the 2008 Olympics with Briton Kelly Sotherton set to receive the medal.

Chernova had already served another doping ban that saw her stripped of Olympic bronze at London in 2012 and the 2011 world title from Daegu in South Korea.

Kelly Sotherton of Great Britain, who originally finished fifth in the heptathlon in 2008, confirmed on Twitter that she will now receive the bronze. On Monday, nearly nine years after the Beijing Games, she got a call to tell her that she had been upgraded to a bronze medal.

'If I am to get a medal I want a fresh, clean one.

Chernova's positive is the latest in a long line from the IOC's re-analysis of stored anti-doping samples from the 2008 and 2012 Games.

In another Russian case involving turinabol announced on Monday, the International Olympic Committee disqualified runner Maksim Dyldin from the 400-meter individual and relay events at the London Olympics. In November of previous year, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) ruled that the Russian would be stripped of that title for doping.

The saga has also taken an emotional toll, with Sotherton adding: "My mum when I spoke to her this morning was really emotional".

The silver medalist in Beijing, Lyudmila Blonska of Ukraine, has already been disqualified for doping. Dyldin was fifth at the finals of the 4x400 relay meter in London in 2012.

Samples are stored for a decade, and for the 2008 and 2012 re-tests Russian Federation has had the most positive cases per nation. Exactly one-third of those, 37, are Russian.

The two have each been caught thanks to new techniques provided by former Moscow Laboratory director Grigory Rodchenkov, who has since defected to the U.S., which can detect steroids in the body for far longer.
