House sends bill to Trump blocking online privacy regulation

The White House said Wednesday that President Trump plans to sign a repeal of the Obama administration's broadband-privacy rules, which would have required companies to get consent from consumers before they sell their sensitive information to other companies.

Congress voted yesterday, 215 to 205, to follow suit, passing a resolution to overturn the Obama-era rules.

Now, understand that the regulation that the Senate voted to kill was not to prevent this from being done.

The resolution - which was approved by the Senate last week - blocks an FCC rule that would bar ISPs from selling customer data, including app usage, browsing history, even Social Security numbers, to marketers and others. The legislation now makes its way to the president's desk for his signature.

"These members of Congress voted to gut internet privacy and allow ISPs like Comcast to sell your personal information to advertisers without your consent".

"Broadband providers know deeply personal information about us and our families", Pelosi said on the House floor.

What information is my Internet service provider collecting about me? .

Several thousand voters in Florida's 18th Congressional District will receive robocalls this week from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee questioning Republican freshman Brian Mast's vote to repeal FCC privacy rules. The ISP privacy rules, passed in October, were "designed to benefit one group of favored companies over another group of disfavored companies", said Ajit Pai, the new FCC chairman, a Republican who opposed the regulations.

Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy of California said the FTC has acted as America's online privacy regulator since the dawn of the internet. Oftentimes, this private information is used for targeted advertising. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) have argued that the repeal of the broadband privacy rules will not leave Americans with less privacy protection than they have now, but Grant said this misses the point entirely.

Swire recommends using pop-up blockers, anti-tracking software like Tor, or Privacy Badger, and a virtual private network.

Only a few states regulate specific practices by broadband providers, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures, which tracks state laws. The regulation would prohibit ISPs like AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast from sharing that data without getting explicit content from consumers via an "opt-in" agreement.
