Instagram cruises to 700 million users

  • Instagram has announced that it attracted another 100 million users in just four months – resulting in a total user base of 700 million. The firm said the growth was due to its new features ‘like stories live video and disappearing messages in Dire

Instagram had 500 million users in June a year ago, and took about 6 months to reach another 100 million users in December.

Facebook-owned photo sharing service Instagramannounced another milestone Wednesday morning: Instagram is now being used by more than 700 million people every month.

The network attributes its accelerated growth to global expansion, along with the success of new features like Stories, live video, and disappearing messages in Direct. Instagram has been rolling out new features to become an alternative to Snapchat. While Instagram grows, Twitter falters, and many ponder where the ultra-popular microblogging service will go from here on out.

Instagram's combined ephemeral and permanent messaging feature Direct (also inspired by Snapchat) boasts 375 million monthly users.

What's more, the social network told Engadget's sister site that the evaporating Stories feature is at least partially responsible for the uptick in users and them sticking around.

According to Instagram, the U.S.is its biggest market, followed by Brazil, which it says has always been its number two. Last Fall, Instagram debuted Stories, a near carbon copy of Snapchat's Stories, which had gained a huge following and threatened Instagram's grip on users.

The firm had just 13 employees and 30 million users at the time. The Instagram management understands this well, which is justified by the efforts the management has been taking to increase the number of advertisers on the photo-sharing platform. Considering the pace at which it is growing, it won't be long before it joins Facebook's other properties (WhatsApp, Messenger and Facebook itself) in the billion-user club. "Usually you get to some large number, and it's definitely more than two times the size we are now", said Systrom to the New York Times.
