The Illinois House passed legislation Tuesday that would protect access to abortions and allow tax money to go toward the procedure.

Chicago Rep. Sara Feigenholtz's measure would lift restrictions on abortions funded by Medicaid or state employee health insurance. "I pray that this divisive issue will be put behind us and our government officials will now concentrate on the many hard challenges facing IL". It will include a rally for measures including Feigenholtz's bill and the long-stalled ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. "Today, we stated unequivocally that access to safe legal abortion will remain protected in IL".

The vote capped a two-hour debate and coincided with the Illinois Women March on Springfield for a "progressive agenda".

State Sen. Daniel Biss (D-Evanston) took to Twitter on Tuesday to voice support for the bill: "Great news: #HB40 passes in House, now heading to the Senate".

"You can look up how people voted". "The first time I remember marching for women's rights was when my daughter was about 6 years old", said Toni Oplt, protester. The Illinois legislation aims to delink the state from the feds, so that even if that happens, abortion will remain legal here. Illinois House Republicans unanimously voted down the bill, along with five Democrats. "We have to change the system to grow", Rauner said. "Women deserve the right to control their own bodies, their own lives (and) their own economic futures". Springing from the inauguration of Republican President Donald Trump in January, the issue has gained enough steam this spring to force GOP Bruce Rauner to walk back his former support for expanding publicly-funded abortions. Rauner and his wife have also been listed as $50,000 sponsors for a Planned Parenthood of IL fundraiser later this week. "The federal government prohibits the practice, and polls show a substantial segment of the American public reject it", Cardinal Cupich said in his statement.

State Senate leaders told abortion activists that they plan to push the bill through the legislature and work to override Rauner's veto.

The governor's healthcare director, Felicia Norwood, defended his pro-choice credentials saying, "Gov. Rauner will continue to ensure that IL maintains protections for women seeking abortions".
