McIlroy refuses to rule out Masters glory

10 April, 2017, 02:00 | Author: Nora May

Rory McIlroy knows he will have to match his best golf around Augusta National on Sunday if he is to finally achieve his ambition of becoming Masters champion, writes Simon Lewis.

McIlroy was climbing the leaderboard until he bogeyed the fifth and double bogeyed the seventh. His average over 30 rounds at Augusta National is 71.9.

Charley Hoffman has led most of the way at the Masters, but a sloppy finish on Moving Day cost him the top spot.

Former world number one Jason Day easily avoided the embarrassment of being outscored by his marker in the third round of the Masters.

A tradition like no other: The Masters clings to its ban on cellphones, even as golf's other major championships and tours allow fans to stay connected when they're out on the course.

He wound up going nowhere. "I'll be able to tell you better tomorrow night if I think those missed opportunities have ruined my chances, but I just need to go out and play a good round of golf tomorrow".

"I feel like I play as aggressive as anyone round here".

"My best score round here is 65 and I'm going to need something like that if not lower to have a chance tomorrow", McIlroy said on Saturday night. It hasn't done me much good yet!

Asked if he will have a "nothing-to-lose approach", he replied: "Yeah, but again you can't start going for shots that aren't there". He was three shots behind, a name on the white leaderboards that was getting everyone's attention.

At the par-five second, the 27-year-old reached the green in two to set up an early birdie and he followed up with another at the short par-four third, chipping to two feet. The only thing he couldn't do was leave it short. "I got to work on some stuff in my short game and I felt as comfortable on the greens here as I ever had, even though I had a couple of three-putts". "I was a little frustrated". But his sand shot caught the slope and ran some 65 feet away. At the fifth, he three-putted from 40 feet.

"As in any tournament, I just like to get within three or four shots on a Sunday afternoon".

"Oh, I just didn't want Jeff to beat me", said the Australian. And where I hit my drives on 13 and 15, I should be making birdie off the tee shots. "I was just in between clubs on both of those holes. But that's the way it is".
