The sirens began sounding late Friday night.

The Office of Emergency Management was able to turn off all the sirens by 1:20 a.m., said Syed.

He said his office eventually had to shut down the system, which is used to alert people to shelter indoors during severe weather.

City crews worked throughout the day Saturday to reactivate the system, and residents were warned to be patient in case the sirens came on again.

City spokeswoman Sana Syed said Saturday that hacking is one of the possible causes investigators are considering.

Tuesday to have warm weather, clear skies
Friday will be windy and much cooler, with highs in the mid to upper 50s, but temps will rebound under sunny skies this weekend . THURSDAY NIGHT: A little rain-snow mix will be possible Thursday night, with a cold overnight low temperature of 33 degrees.

The incident, initially labeled a "system malfunction", sparked an avalanche of anxious posts on social media and calls to the emergency 911 system.

The city has asked for assistance from the Federal Communications Commission in determining who was behind the hack. "We are putting in safeguards to ensure this type of hack does not happen again", the city said in a news release.

Officials say fire dispatch crews had to manually shut off the sirens. "We had no malfunction".

Reports are pouring in of tornado sirens sounding throughout the Dallas area, including downtown. The system is still down and the city is relying on other mass notification systems including reverse 911 and social media for emergencies.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings promised the perpetrator would be found and prosecuted. Officials Saturday said the longest wait time at the 911 call center was six minutes. "It's a costly proposition, which is why every dollar of taxpayer money must be spent with critical needs such as this in mind".
