Speculation That Pregnancy Will End Serena William's Career Is Sexist And Stupid

  • Serena Williams of the US hits a return against Venus Williams of the US during the women's singles final on day 13 of the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne

It will be a blast to see Serena become a mother.

Williams, 35, posted a side profile shot of herself in a yellow swimsuit on Snapchat with a caption that read "20 weeks" before deleting it.

The elder Williams sister, who turns 37 in June, is experiencing a tremendous second wind. Not one. Clearly, she is superwoman. "How much would she want her career back?"

Court was 29 when she gave birth to son Daniel in 1972 and the next year captured her final three Grand Slam titles, sweeping the Australian, French and US Open crowns.

They shunned the typical junior development circuit for work on their own, Venus drawing laughs when she said she expected to battle her sister for world number one - only to be proven correct in epic fashion.

The real question, to my mind, relates to how she won the Australia Open in January when she was close to two months pregnant - a state many of us refer to politely as hell on Earth, what with the nausea and exhaustion and aches where you didn't know you could ache. She earned her first "Serena Slam".

Venus has dueled Serena nine times at a Grand Slam final, going 2-7.

Over the past year, Williams' schedule has included few tournaments outside the Grand Slams. The grand slam winning tennis player was ranked as the top paid female athlete in the world on a list in 2016.

Venus is 14-5 so far in 2017.

Former world number one Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, 27, won the Indian Wells and Miami titles in March of previous year before missing the rest of the season after announcing she was expecting a baby in December.

The death of her sister coupled with a series of devastating injuries left Serena with a reputation for being wildly inconsistent on the court.

Dr. Lauren Streicher, clinical associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, said Williams' age - 35 - increases her chances of pregnancy complications, such as developing high blood pressure. My coordination, my timing was all out and I thought: 'what's wrong with me?'

"I chose not to compete when I was pregnant". Only one woman has won more: Margaret Smith Court, who claimed part of her 24 during the amateur era.

From a psychological standpoint, all engines must be a go for Venus, who oh by the way, has probably known about this pregnancy significantly longer than any of us have.

As a result of this, you can imagine the relief on the following players now that she's "out of the way". The staggering amount of discipline it takes to achieve a body like Serena's is rarely mentioned in discussions on her game, and in that silence is the implicit notion that she somehow has an advantage due to African ancestry. Though she had talent and an awe-inspiring work ethic, she was consistently labeled as someone that didn't have the drive to compete.
