"I do not see a role in Libya".

Trump however made clear he does not see a USA role in Libya, saying the country was over extended elsewhere.

Trump said he does "see a role in getting rid of ISIS", though it was unclear whether he believes that role should extend to Libya.

"I told President Trump that we have confidence, even though this is a hard moment, in the future of the European Union and certainly in the importance of the relationship between the United States and Italy", he said.

Earlier Friday, at the start of his meeting in Trudeau's office, Gentiloni said Canada and Italy share a common, pro-trade world view.

The leaders also discussed the upcoming Group of Seven summit in Sicily next month, cooperation between the nations on counter-terrorism, the anti-Islamic State campaign, the situation in Libya and migration.

Trump will travel to Europe next month for the first time since taking office for a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting in Brussels, followed by the G7 meeting in Italy.

Former President Barack Obama also criticized North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members for not meeting their defense spending obligations, though he didn't go as far as Trump.

"Strong borders is a vital component", Trump said while alongside Gentiloni, whose country has been one of the most affected by the migrant crisis that has roiled Europe.

"The US role in this is very critical", the prime minister said.

At Thursday's news conference, Trump didn't specifically weigh in on the French election, nor would he say outright whether he supported countries staying in the EU.

The two leaders also took to their podiums as reports surfaced of an attack that killed one police officer and wounded another in Paris.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Wednesday that the White House would be reaching out to the Vatican to "see if a meeting, an audience with the Pope can be accommodated".

Talks with Italian leader Paolo Gentiloni were expected to address US commitments to trade and military partnerships with European allies, as well as security concerns, including the Syrian civil war and Russia's role in the conflict. "And it's also, in my opinion - in my very strong opinion, important for the United States", he said.

Still, the White House is eager to tout progress on the litany of agenda items Trump promised to fulfill in his first 100 days, despite setbacks including a high-profile failure in repealing and replacing the current health care law. We want to keep it going We feel confident that will happen, that we'll avoid a shutdown.
