Trump tweets don't help: 1st Twitter revenue drop since IPO

27 April, 2017, 02:08 | Author: Celia Hoffman

Twitter reported its first ever year-over-year decline in revenue growth for its first quarter earnings on Wednesday, but still managed to beat analysts' expectations across the board and boost its shares more than 10% in pre-marking trading.

The microblogging social network said its tally of monthly active users (MAU) has increased from 319 million in Q4 to 328 million in Q1, representing growth of around six percent.

Analysts on average had expected 321.3m monthly active users, according to market research firm FactSet StreetAccount. As Twitter struggles to define its future, it faces competitors with larger and faster-growing user bases, like Facebook Inc., Instagram and Snap Inc., which went public in the first quarter.

Shares of Twitter (TWTR) are up $1.32, or 9%, at $15.92, after the company this morning reported Q1 revenue and earnings per share that comfortably topped analysts' expectations, with revenue declining even as usage grew.

Twitter shares were up 11 percent at $16.25 in premarket trade on Tuesday. In Q1, we reduced GAAP net loss significantly and achieved highest adj. EBITDA margin to date, despite Y/Y decline in revenue.

It's how he wishes his "many enemies" a happy new year, how he bypasses the "unfair" media to communicate directly with the American people and - perhaps - a big part of how he won the White House. Their prediction: Twitter will see a 14% decline in revenue, from $595 million in Q1 past year to $512 million this quarter.

Slow rise in the number of users and an inevitably slow business from ad inventory due to the sluggishly rising user count are expected to bring trouble to Twitter's revenues.

Excluding items, adjusted net income was $82.40 million or $0.11 per share, compared to income of $102.72 million a year ago.

You'd think Twitter would be able to milk its status as President Donald Trump's megaphone. Has Twitter finally jumpstarted its growth for the long haul?

It means that Twitter already has a billion people who were interested enough to take the time to sign up but didn't have a good reason to consistently come back.

In its latest quarterly report, Twitter said that it generated nearly $548 million in revenue, managing to earn 11 cents to a share.
