The ride-sharing company Uber set ambitious goals Tuesday to create a network of flying taxis in Dubai and the Dallas area by the year 2020.

On-demand vehicle service company Uber has announced that it will be taking to the skies in three years.

Still, flying cars face a number of logistical, technical and regulatory obstacles: Much as in the development of electric planes, battery limitations place boundaries on the duration of a flight in an all-electric flying auto.

Uber may be embroiled in a cascade of corporate crises, but this week it will lay out a radical vision for its future: flying cars.

Uber Technologies hopes to one day operate a network of flying cars.

Other firms such as Airbus have already promised to have "flying taxis" on test flights this year. We haven't even nailed down self-driving cars yet, and now the buzz is all about flying cars. The flying vehicles would be of the VTOL variety - that is, they would be aerial vehicles that take off and land vertically.

UberAir service could reduce the time required to get between San Jose in California's Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Marina from two hours to 15 minutes, Holden said.

Uber has transformed hundreds of cities around the world with its cheap, rapid taxi service - and the next step will be to conquer the skies. The partnerships are with established aeronautics and emerging VTOL players, including Aurora Flight Sciences, Embraer, Bell Helicopter, Pistrel Aircraft, Mooney and ChargePoint, and will focus on two markets initially, including Dallas in the US and Dubai overseas.

Uber's flying vehicle plans are coming together - and it looks like it won't be taking to the skies alone. Since Uber imagines a future with significantly less cars on the road, the company expects to use the top level of existing parking structures to house the vertiport stations. Instead, the company is partnering with a variety of aircraft manufacturers, charging company ChargePoint and real estate companies to do that.

"Fort Worth is thrilled to be one of the partner cities in Uber's efforts to offer this exciting technology that will ultimately better serve our residents and visitors", Mayor Betsy Price wrote in a statement as part of an Uber news release.

The partnership agreement provides the basis for a system of urban transportation solutions that will enable users of the Uber Elevate Network to request an Aurora eVTOL aircraft via Uber's computer or mobile software applications. Just this week, Larry Page's Alphabet (Google's parent company) announced that it's Kitty Hawk flying auto - which looks like a Spider-Man vehicle - will apparently go on sale by the end of this year.
