Under the Paris Agreement, countries pledged to keep global average temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero in the second half of the century.

The US and China were regarded as the top two emitters of greenhouse gases and the Trump's roll back was expected to cast a dark shadow over the Paris climate deal.

The ministers present at the meeting had been due to publish a joint statement at the end of the summit, but Carlo Calenda, the Italian minister for economic development, said the USA expressed reservations caused effort's failure.

The Paris treaty is the first global agreement on curbing greenhouse gas emissions, in attempt to avert the most catastrophic outcome of climate change, but Trump has sent conflicting messages about whether the USA would uphold its promises made in Paris.

"We've made remarkable progress in fighting climate change".

"We will have to further see changes in the USA domestic policies" that may affect the efforts to cut greenhouse-gas pollution, Xie Zhenhua, China's special representative on climate change, told reporters at a briefing in Beijing on Tuesday.

"Global effort against climate change is an irreversible process that can not be postponed", according to the statement, which also underscores the need for entering into the textual negotiation on the procedures and guidelines for the Paris agreement as soon as possible.

But Professor John Barrett, of Leeds University, an expert on imported emissions, said: "The UK's imported emissions remain very high in comparison to other developed countries and there is further action that could be taken, including low-carbon technology transfer and the more sustainable use of imported materials and products". We see climate action and the clean energy transition for what it is: "a driver of jobs and econom growth, a moral imperative and a promise for a better future", the Commissioner added.

However, Calenda's summary of the meeting also revealed some significant areas of agreement across the G7.

And there was also agreement across the board on the importance of clean energy technologies and continued research and development.
