Cannes apologizes for projection snafu with Netflix's 'Okja'

The film has also been contentious because Netflix have refused to screen it in French cinemas.

Staff adjusted the curtains at the side of the screen and restarted the film from the beginning shortly afterwards.

The audience booed the Netflix logo, which appeared before the film started, and it then became clear the film was playing in the wrong aspect ratio.

The Festival said: "This incident is completely due to the technical staff of the festival who deeply apologize to the director and his team, to the producers as well as to the audience". "Let's be honest, there are thousands of films at Cannes that won't be screened in a cinema", she said.

When Cannes announced its lineup, French distributors protested the festival for admitting Netflix's movies without the streaming company first securing theatrical distribution for its films in France.

At a press conference following the screening, Tilda Swinton was asked about the festival's likely reluctance to award Okja the Palme d'Or, and responded: "T$3 he truth is we didn't come here for prizes".

So she follows Okja - first careening through Mirando's Seoul office like a one-girl wrecking ball, then chasing her truck to the airport.

Gyllenhaal made light of speculation the screening glitch had been sabotage, possibly by Netflix's opponents in the French movie industry angry at its refusal to release the film in theatres, saying: "It was the ALF I guess".

But his fellow jury member Hollywood star Will Smith took a strongly opposing view, and said he was "looking for the opportunity to slam my hand on the table and disagree with Pedro".

Swinton called the furor over screen sizes "an enormous and really interesting conversation" but added it's disingenuous for anybody to suggest that all films screened at Cannes go on to have a big-screen theatrical run. "It's all an evolutionary process, and Netflix has given Bong Joon Ho the chance to make his absolutely liberated vision a reality, and for that, I'm so grateful". Starring Ahn Seo-hyun, Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Steven Yeun, Lily Collins, Devon Bostick, Byun Hee-bong, and Shirley Henderson, the Netflix-produced and distributed feature tracks the struggle to stop a multinational corporation from kidnapping the titular monster.

Netflix has long craved the prestige of major film festival and awards season honors, but cinema purists have pushed back, saying the streaming giant's inclusion in an event like Cannes sets a unsafe precedent, since the company's films are primarily distributed online rather than on the big screen.
