"The idea is that quality news and fact-based reporting will be able to find audiences more quickly, and it will help to elevate what we're doing", Mic publisher Cory Haik told BI.

Facebook announced the change today in a blog post that over the coming months it will begin rolling out an update meant to create a "more informative experience" by reducing such low-quality posts by cutting off the economic incentives of financially-motivated spammers.

Facebook's quest to rid the News Feed of misinformation and misleading content has a new target: websites that are littered with "disruptive, shocking or malicious ads", and that offer little actual content. The algorithm will be able to show these links lower on the News Feedand may no longer be considered as an ad.

The social network is making use of artificial intelligence to check if the new websites those are shared on Facebook provide a low-quality user experience.

"These changes are happening as Facebook has said they are running out of upside in terms of monetization and ad units within their own sites and platforms", Mr. Lemp wrote, adding that Facebook's News Feed has become "the new front page for every media company in the world".

One practical result of this change is how it will affect the prevalence of "fake news" on the social networking site. Facebook created a policy previous year to prevent misleading ad positioning, like overly sensationalized headlines and links that send people off to unrelated or low-quality content sites. Facebook understands that its users want to click a link and have the best experience after.

"Publishers that do not have the type of low-quality landing page experience referenced may see a small increase in traffic, while publishers who do should see a decline in traffic", the company said. Facebook says it will deploy its new algorithm gradually over the next few months. They did so to identify the little substantive content and a large number of disruptive malicious ads.

The move is a strike against viral publishers that use Facebook's ad tools to do content arbitrage, buying eyeballs at low prices and then turning a profit on the click using voluminous ad loads.
