Fernando Alonso's A Free Agent At The End Of This F1 Season

16 May, 2017, 09:08 | Author: Nora May

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain steers his vehicle during the second free practice session for the Spanish Formula One Grand Prix at the Barcelona Catalunya racetrack in Montmelo, Spain, Friday, May 12, 2017.

Lewis Hamilton clocked a fastest lap of 1 minute, 21.521 seconds, with Vatteri Bottas only 0.029 seconds slower. "We knew that with one tenth between three or here we had to put a flawless lap together and today was one of those days when everything came together".

"Everything today went ideal - better than what we thought", said Alonso, who'd not qualified as high since last year's Hungarian Grand Prix.

Things didn't appear close to improving back home.

It's the first time that I've had a Friday this season without any big problems - we ran through our programme without any big issues, so that was good.

The latest blow comes a day after an ultimatum from Alonso: either McLaren gives him a competitive auto by October, or he will look to change teams or even consider leaving F1. At the end of the day I felt a bit more comfortable. He topped it off by clocking a better lap than Force India pair Sergio Perez and Esteban Icon and Williams' Felipe Massa.

Nixon, the former analyst, said he also expects significant cooperation with South Korean intelligence services going forward. The North's state media have been running stories about the plot since last week.

He put the result down to a ideal lap on a track that helps mask Honda's power deficit, which bodes well for McLaren at the Monaco Grand Prix on one of the least power-sensitive circuits on the calendar.

Alonso repeated what he said in an interview with AS while in Australia: "Now is not the time to think beyond this summer, but in September or October, I will need to consider what I will do next year..." Obviously I don't have 100 per cent confidence because in four races we have four DNFs.

Hamilton won at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in 2014, one of 10 different winners in as many years at the race often used by teams to bring major upgrades to their cars. "Today everything went right and I still have the feeling that tomorrow is going to be okay".

You'd think they'd have plenty of opportunities in the auto, but not this year on this team. The season's start is in risk of damaging the reputation of the once proud McLaren, which has 12 driver titles and eight constructor titles to its name.

And despite two weeks to work on the auto, McLaren has made no progress.

"On the chassis side we have more or less confirmed what we have thought from the opening races", said Alonso. He marked the importance of a good start in order to protect his position.
