  • Police in NI vigilant after NHS cyber attack

Thousands of Irish hospitals thought to have been hit during the major cyber attack on the NHS were infected by a separate, older virus, it has emerged.

Earlier, the HSE said it was taking precautionary action to protect its IT systems following the ransomware attack on Britain's National Health Service (NHS).

The Police Service of Northern Ireland's Cyber Crime Centre will continue to actively participate in the national co-ordinated response to this attack and we would encourage all local businesses and public services to take immediate steps to protect their systems and reduce their vulnerability.

"In all three cases, the hospital was returned to the health network and continued to deliver patient care with no impact", the HSE said.

A spokeswoman said that due to the threat its inward email system had been frozen, resulting in the organisation not receiving any notifications of child protection and welfare concerns via email since Friday. The issues were not related to the ransomware cyber attack, and affected two administrative computers that did not hold patient records.

More than 200,000 institutions and organisations were infected by the "WannaCry" virus which struck in the United Kingdom and Spain first on Friday before spreading around the world.

Lyft, Waymo ink self-driving car deal: NY Times

The NHS in the United Kingdom was affected by the hack with 48 out of 248 NHS trusts affected by the hack, although this number has been reduced since the start of the attack.

External emails were also blocked to much of the HSE, including Tusla, the Child and Family Agency.

Here, businesses remain on alert, amid fears it could spread further.

Staff members were unable to receive emails from internal and external sources, access the internet or external based servers. "This incident has tested our people and our processes and provided us with huge learning to build upon", he said.

Brad Smith, Microsoft president and chief legal officer, said in a blog post that the governments of the world "should treat this attack as a wake-up call", though he did not go on to say that they should abandon using Microsoft operating systems.

"We ask anyone who has reported a child protection concern by email since Friday, or who has a concern about a child, to contact their local social work duty team immediately".
