  • Judge orders Uber not to use technology taken from Waymo

Lyft continues to lag behind Uber in the ride-hailing market while Waymo is competing against the same company in the self-driving market.

In a statement to NBC News, a Lyft representative said the plan is to partner with Waymo to "safely and responsibly launch self-driving vehicle pilots".

Waymo is suing Uber, alleging the ride-hailing giant is using trade secrets stolen by a former engineer to develop self-driving technology. While details about their agreement remain relatively bleak, their alliance is further indication that building partnerships is the best way to combat and edge out their common foe: Uber.

Lyft is Uber's chief ride-hailing rival in the US, though it is a distant second in market share. The confirmation of their deal comes a few days after court proceedings between Waymo and Uber started to heat up.

It also said that the country's public finances are projected to improve but risks to the fiscal outlook remain. Tackling the causes of this divergence is the key challenge we must address in the months and years to come".

But with the added heft of Google-owned Waymo (and, presumably, the global mapping information, consumer data, and massive cash war chest of its parent company), Lyft's chances versus Uber in the coming autonomous vehicle wars just got a lot better.

"We're looking forward to working with Lyft to explore new self-exploring products that will make our roads safer and transportation more accessible", Waymo said in a statement to multiple media outlets. Uber's request to handle the dispute in arbitration was denied Thursday by a judge, who also asked federal prosecutors to investigate allegations against the Uber executive at the center of the case.

Waymo, an automotive business owned by Google's parent company, is now holding public trials on its own using Chrysler minivans equipped with its technology in Phoenix.
