President Donald Trump gives the commencement address at the US Coast Guard Academy.

President Donald Trump offered a robust defense of his presidency Wednesday, arguing that he has been treated unfairly by the Washington media amid a series of deepening scandals that have engulfed his administration.

Trump's appearance at the academy came the day after reports that he had personally appealed to Comey to abandon the FBI's investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

In rambling remarks at the military branch's commencement Wednesday, Trump, following weeks negative coverage of his own making, said "no politician in history ... has been treated worse".

"The people understand what I am doing and that is the most important thing", Trump said.

The president says they can't let the critics get in the way of their dreams.

Trump and his administration have been on the defense ever since explosive reports earlier this week that he revealed highly classified information, provided by Israel, to Russian diplomats in their Oval Office meeting. But he says, "you can not let them get you down". "And they look to the United States Coast Guard to fill that vacuum". (He called his critics "pathetic.") It should be interesting to see if Trump goes off-script and has any words of wisdom for the young graduates.

"Don't back down, and never stop doing what you know is right", he thundered. I guess that's why I want to thank you.

Lapp said President Trump's visit is a chance for the fishing industry to gain visibility and ask for help.

The pair of scandals - two of the most serious Trump has faced during a presidency not short of controversies - have many wondering if they may prompt rank and file Republican congresspeople to start turning on the unpopular president - and whether impeachment is now a possibility. We'll have reporters on the campus to talk to families and to report on President Trump's keynote address.

The class of 2017's 195 new ensigns in all chose a motto "the storm yields courage"- and courage was what President Trump told them to have when it comes to putting their heads down.To fight.
