  • Saturday's 2-0 defeat at home to relegation-threatened Swansea prompted an angry crowd response

"Sunderland boss David Moyes has said that it's hard to disagree with Alan Shearer's view of his players" performance in their 2-0 loss to Swansea at home on Saturday.

In Moyes' defence, he replaced Sam Allardyce at the Stadium of Light at a time when Short was looking to rein in spending amid mounting debts and hoping to offload a business which has become increasingly dependent upon his financial largesse.

David Moyes was criticised for saying Sunderland, who had enjoyed several narrow escapes in previous campaigns, faced another relegation battle just two games into the current season.

'I was incredibly disappointed with the performance.

His summer rebuilding work was conducted hurriedly and, with Short attempting to offload the club, he found himself shopping in the bargain basement, bringing in the likes of Victor Anichebe, Steven Pienaar and Joleon Lescott on free transfers.

Asked whether he thought it had been a frightful first season at Sunderland, the former Everton boss admitted that everyone at the club was very disappointed.

"They all know and theyre ongoing so its been passed over to [chief executive] Martin Bain, and theyll speak with their agents and see where we go".

And Moyes, after reviewing the ProZone statistics of his relegated side, said: 'I'd have to say that in many ways he was right.

Moyes said: "I've laid out the plans about what I would like, what I think it needs".

Moyes suspects that some of his players have downed tools and he has warned they should think twice if they believe they're good enough to get a move to another Premier League club.

"We have to improve and we go to Arsenal and be determined, the players have to show they can play at this level, for most of this season we have not been able to show that, this is a chance to show they can play on the stages like the Emirates and Stamford Bridge".

"It's not for me to say here [what the problems are], it's for everyone connected to the club to look at".

"But I have got to say, it hasn't happened for quite a few managers and it has been that way for quite a while".

"In football, sometimes you win games".

"Every game counts as far as I'm concerned and you're judged in every one, so we have to perform much better against Arsenal". This is the only anomaly where it hasn't happened.

"Of course it has because of the outcome, and we have said we have been really disappointed by it".
