Officials said a family of four, including four-year-old twins, died in the suburb of Kraaifontein after lightning set their house on fire.

In a statement, the City said that residents were still being asked to continue using less than 100 litres per person per day and that the cold front now sweeping across the city was not a green light "out of our drought situation". Two people were injured when a roof blew off in Lavender Hill.

"The South African Weather Services has advised that the current weather conditions will persist until approximately 5am to 6am tomorrow morning whereafter the showers will subside".

"Residents living in informal settlements will probably be the hardest hit", Charlotte Powell, Cape Town city's disaster management spokeswoman said.

Local media outlet Jacaranda FM attributed the death toll of eight to James-Brent Styan, a provincial official. "We're expecting serious action around the coastal areas when the big waves start coming in this afternoon", he said.

"The public is cautioned to stay away from Western Cape beaches throughout the day", Styan said.

"We must therefore continue to save water now and we can not afford to have our water use influenced by the weather - using less than 100l per person per day whether at home, work, school or elsewhere remains the requirement".
