German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the European G20 participants are united behind the Paris climate accord despite the American decision to pull out of the deal.

Ross' remarks come a week before President Donald Trump arrives in Germany for the G20 summit of the world's 20 most powerful world leaders.

"The disagreement is obvious, and it would be dishonest to gloss over it", she said. I will not do that in any case, "Merkel said".

"Whoever believes that you can solve problems through isolation and protectionism is making a grave error".

Without naming him, Merkel appeared to lament President Trump's uncertainty about human-induced climate change, saying, "We can't, and we won't, wait until the last person on earth is convinced of the scientific evidence for climate change".

Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, said during the summit that "the fight against climate change, and all the research, innovation and technological progress it will bring, will continue, with or without the US". He has proposed renegotiating the Paris accord.

Chancellor Merkel and President Trump will meet with their worldwide counterparts at the G-20 summit in Hamburg.

The German chancellor and her Christian Democratic Union party have previously expressed opposition to same-sex marriage on several occasions, largely to avoid confrontation with more conservative members.

In a swipe at Trump's "America First" rhetoric, the chancellor said that nations turning to isolation and protectionism are making a serious mistake and showcased a renewed "spirit of unity" in the European Union after the United Kingdom decision to exit.

She said the forum, which meets on July 7 and 8, would also discuss common approaches to trade, another area in which the Trump administration's protectionist instincts are at odds with the European Union's. She said that "the Paris agreement is irreversible and it is not negotiable".

Merkel also spoke about the importance of the US being in the group of 20 nations. "We want a trustful partner in the USA on security but also on trade and economic issues - to the benefit of USA citizens and European citizens".
