Google's Gmail service will no longer scan the contents of user emails, relying instead on other data for personalized ads.

Privacy advocates have long criticized Google's practice of using email data to tailor advertising, but now the company is putting an end to the method.

Here is a comforting piece of news, Bloomberg is reporting that Google has chose to cease reading your emails to determine what ads to show you in Gmail. Google argued in court in 2013 that its users should have a reasonable expectation that their emails are subject to "automatic processing", but the judge disagreed, finding that scanning is not considered an "instrumental part of the transmission of email".

"G Suite customers and free consumer Gmail users can remain confident that Google will keep privacy and security paramount as we continue to innovate", said Greene.

Google's practice of analyzing incoming and outgoing emails of its free consumer Gmail users has been criticized on privacy concerns. Google also offers its users the choice to opt out of this personalization.

'President Trump believes the climate is changing': Ambassador Haley
Wisconsin Congressman Glenn Grothman says he supports President Trump's decision to pull the US out of the Paris Climate Accord. Leaders of 211 cities have declared themselves "Climate Mayors" and promised to work toward the Paris targets.

US District Judge Lucy Koh ruled in March that the settlement was hard to understand and "does not clearly disclose the fact that Google intercepts, scans and analyzes the contents of emails sent by non-Gmail users to Gmail users for the purposes of creating user profiles of the Gmail users to create targeted advertising".

Alphabet Inc.'s Google Cloud sells a package of office software, called G Suite, that competes with market leader Microsoft Corp. Google also revealed today that Gmail now has over 1.2 billion users.

This will likely make a lot of free Gmail users very happy.

But this doesn't mean you won't see targeted ads in Gmail. New add-ons will enable features like payments and invoicing directly within Gmail.

So while this is a change which affects consumer Gmail accounts, it does also seem as though it is one created to further reassure G Suite Gmail customers that whichever Gmail services they use (G Suite or consumer), the same experience, and security, can be expected.
