Google to stop reading your Gmail to help sell ads

  • Google will stop scanning Gmail messages to sell targeted ads

Google recently announced that it will stop scanning it's Gmail user's emails in order to provide them with more personalized adverts. In a blog post, the Silicon Valley tech giant outlined how the move will bring the service closer to its ad-free enterprise offering, G Suite.

Google's blogpost explains that Gmail in G Suite is not used for ads personalization, and they will now do the same with regular, old Gmail as well.

By ending scanning for all its email services, Google may be hoping more businesses will use the G Suite service. "Users can change those settings at any time, including disabling ads personalization". Well, that's changing now - Google on Friday announced that it will stop scanning emails of its users for personalised advertisements.

Ads based on scanned email messages drew lawsuits and some of the most strident criticism the company faced in its early years, but offered marketers a much more targeted way to reach consumers.

Google now scans individual users' inboxes to bring them better targeted advertisements.

That doesn't mean that Gmail is going ad free. However, because Google has many other methods of targeting users, the loss may not be as significant as it may appear. But Microsoft's Cortana can also scan emails in Outlook.com and Office 365 to provide users with reminders for events based on the content of emails. Corporate customers paying for its G Suite email don't see such ads and their accounts aren't scanned.

The brand is putting an end to a practice which was limelight due to privacy concerns since its inception.

In the blog post, Greene added: "Google's G Suite business is gaining enormous traction among enterprise users".

Google has been doing this nearly since it launched its email service.

The service does not have ads and does not scan emails.

There will still be ads shown in Gmail, so Google isn't eliminating the ads within Gmail with this change.

Greene also emphasised Google's focus on transparency and security, claiming no other email service protects its users form spam, hacking and phishing as successfully as Gmail.
