Havana: Trump's Cuba Policy Speech 'Grotesque Spectacle'

  • U.S. President Donald Trump signs a document after announcing his Cuba policy at the Manuel Artime Theater in the Little Havana neighborhoo

Trump announced on Friday new restrictions on Americans' travel to Cuba and USA business with the Cuban military, a step to tighten the United States policy toward the neighbouring country.

"Unfortunately, today's moves actually limit the possibility for positive change on the island and risk ceding growth opportunities to other countries that, frankly, may not share America's interest in a free and democratic Cuba that respects human rights", Myron Brilliant, the chamber's executive vice president and head of global affairs, said in a statement emailed to reporters.

"We will not be silent in the face of communist oppression any longer", he said while surrounded by a crowd of exiles, emigres and Cuban-Americans, including Republican Sen.

On June 16, 2017, President Donald Trump announced his plan to reverse the Obama administration's efforts to thaw relations with Cuba. -Cuban relations, saying Trump had been badly advised and was resorting to "coercive methods of the past" that were doomed to fail.

"These measures reinforce our patriotism", Rodriguez said, giving the clearest signal yet that the Cuban government would meet Trump's harder line with their own tough talk. "In the Constitution of Cuba, it is said that we will never negotiate under pressure or threats", he said. Last week, the U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly to back new sanctions on Russian Federation. The new ban will revert back to only allowing travel within organized groups.

Although said Directive did not hide the interventionist character of the U.S. policy nor the fact that its main goal was to advance United States interests in order to bring about changes in the economic, political and social systems of our country, it did recognize Cuba's independence, sovereignty and self-determination and the Cuban government as a legitimate and equal interlocutor, as well as the benefits that a civilized coexistence would have for both countries and peoples despite the great differences that exist between both governments.

As a result, the changes - though far-reaching - appear to be less sweeping than many U.S.pro-engagement advocates had feared.

It is also wrong for some to criticize Trump's rollback as an opportunity for China and Russian Federation to increase influence in Cuba. No. The reopening of the US Embassy in Havana after 54 years signaled a willingness of both sides to start working through their differences.

Earlier in the day, Raju said he would get the entire incident "enquired into" and would ensure that "lawful outcomes" follow. The airliner finally let him aboard the flight but soon banned him from all future flights; Air India soon followed suit.

Trump, however, stopped short of breaking diplomatic relations restored in 2015 after more than five decades of hostilities.

Under the Obama administration thaw, trade and financial services restrictions were eased, allowing Americans to send unlimited money to private Cuban nationals back home.

But last week, President Donald Trump noted what was obvious, that Havana has not complied with its pledges.

Trump has broken an age-old tradition for Republican and Democratic U.S. presidents of speaking out for human rights wherever they go.

"Trump is adding teeth to Obama's previous policy, and he's talking about putting the human rights issue first", he added. Castro's government has clearly stated it does not intend to change its one-party political system.

"The United States is in no condition to give us lessons", the Cuban statement said.

They predicted the days of the Castro regime are numbered.

Marselha Margerin of Amnesty International noted that Trump recently traveled to Saudi Arabia, where he lavished its leaders with praise and signed a huge military deal but ignored their flagrant human rights abuses.
