Jimmy Spithill's fighting talk rings hollow as America's Cup defeat draws near

  • Emirates Team New Zealand are that much closer to lifting the America’s Cup

Because Oracle won the qualifiers, the Kiwis started this America's Cup match on the Great Sound with a negative point.

"We changed everything", he said. He said the Kiwis had benefited from some "soft" calls by the umpires. "What we saw when the boys got ashore was they said, 'Look, this isn't over".

Racing continues on Sunday afternoon.

Prior to the Cup finals, conventional wisdom held it that one of the areas where Oracle held an advantage over the New Zealanders was in the technical art of match racing.

Oracle's boat clearly was faster than the opening weekend wipeout, when the Kiwis won four straight races by margins from 30 to 88 seconds.

Day three of the America's Cup Match, presented by Louis Vuitton, was full of drama, incident and history-making action, but the big story of the day is the fightback ORACLE TEAM USA staged against their rivals for the Auld Mug, Emirates Team New Zealand.

So, while predecessor Dean Barker's 2013 challenge ended at the final hurdle, Burling's Team New Zealand are a different story.

HAMILTON, Bermuda, June 25 (Reuters) - New Zealand flew to the edge of America's Cup victory over the US on Sunday, going 6-1 ahead in the first-to-seven final and setting themselves up to exorcise the ghost of losing in San Francisco in 2013.

In the opener, Spithill swerved slightly as the duelling catamarans headed for the start line, allowing Burling to blast across the line with a one-second lead.

Although the New Zealand team got away, the champions recovered well and fought their way back into the race, finding the speed which had evaded them in previous encounters. But it was aggressive tactics by Burling that left Spithill and his mates in the dust at the outset of the race.

"Having turned a 12" deficit into a 6" lead at Mark 5 the Kiwis were looking in a strong position to make it two from two.

"We're all ecstatic about what we have managed to achieve and we are on top of the world, it's going to be a good night", Burling said after coolly steering his space-age 50-foot (15 meter) foiling catamaran to yet another win over Spithill.

"They (Emirates Team New Zealand) sailed better than us today and made a lot fewer mistakes", conceded Jimmy Spithill on what was a disappointing day for Oracle Team USA. Spithill forced a slow rounding on the New Zealand boat and made a pass early on the run. "It is working. The boat is getting quicker". But they faced up to the challenge and sped away to the finish for the first win of the series.
