Kvitova, Barty into Birmingham WTA final

The tournament's other Grand Slam victor, former French Open champion Garbine Muguruza, plays unseeded Australian Ashleigh Barty in the second semifinal.

The second set was barely underway at 1-0 before Safarova conceded the match with her leg causing her too many problems. Kvitova is 2-1 in final appearances on grass and has won nine of her last 12 final appearances overall.

She told reporters: "I think in the first set, I didn't get a look in on many service games, and being able to get a look in there certainly helped my confidence and I think I served a lot better in my second set and was more comfortable in my service game".

It is only Muguruza's third semi-final of the year and the first on grass since she reached the final of Wimbledon in 2015.

Kvitova will next play her fellow Czech Lucie Safarova, who survived a three-hour ordeal against Daria Gavrilova.

"Paris was a bit weird and unusual, and I couldn't play the best over there".

Muguruza went a set down against Vandeweghe, who knocked her out of the Australian Open in January, but fought back to claim the second set. Nevertheless, Spaniard dropped her serve again in game 9 to hand the win to her rival, the biggest in Barty's career.

"It was just about one or two points and one or two breaks", said Kvitova. Czech Republic's Lucie Safarova in action against Czech Republic's Petra Kvitova during their semifinal match at the Birmingham Classic tennis tournament at Edgbaston Priory, Birmingham, England.

Kvitova and Mladenovic exchanged breaks to start, and the two-time Wimbledon victor took control from there, dropping just three points behind her first serve to clinch the opening set. "But to be honest I didn't even realize she was going to retire".

Petra Kvitova has made her first final since being stabbed in her apartment in Czech Republic previous year and her first final on grass since Wimbledon in 2014. Barty showed great poise after winning a match despite dropping the first set and was quite feisty on the return, producing four breaks.

Safarova saved three match-points in the deciding set and rallied to win the last four points of the third set tiebreak to end the three-hour contest on top. "But, for me, so far, great rounds on grass courts".

Last month Kvitova slipped away from Paris with an empty feeling after losing in the second round of the French Open, while Mladenovic became the home star of Roland Garros by ending the title defense of Garbine Muguruza.

It was also about a missed opportunity, which might have cost her the second set.
