New smart speaker expected as Apple kicks off conference

10 June, 2017, 17:02 | Author: Archie Newman

As expected, Apple unveiled the HomePod smart speaker powered by Siri at the WWDC 2017.

Amazon and Google's home speaker devices have been battling it out in recent months, but the $349 HomePod will be Apple's first entry into the market.

The Echo, released in 2015, and Google Home, released previous year, were the first entrants in a promising market.

On the other hand, Google Home works with Chromecast-compatible speakers, while the Echos will soon work with Sonos speakers. That all depends on how wrapped up you and your family are in the Apple ecosystem and how big your budget is.

Take a closer look at the HomePod in our video.

The features of Apple's HomePod are exciting, due to their potential.

The only way to interact with HomePod directly is to use Siri. "There's a lot of things that Siri knows how to do from the phone". When you say "Hey Siri", it starts listening for your command or question.

Apple introduces HomePod during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose. Google and Amazon's comparable offerings will make that tricky. But it's not just about music; Siri is still there to be your everyday assistant.

The Apple HomePod is a wireless speaker that promises to deliver unbelievable audio quality.

The HomePod is covered in cloth, which hides an array of speakers within - it plays music in all directions, but it's aware of whatever space it's in and directs sounds accordingly. By comparison, Apple shipped 51 million iPhones and 9 million iPads during the same stretch. That's impressive by most standards, but it's only a small fraction of iPhone and Mac users.

As of today, the latest Apple TV is the only device that can serve as a HomeKit hub.

The HomePod builds recommendations around what you like.

Will you be interesting in buying the new HomePod for your home?

Let's say you want to turn on your Phillips Hue lights, for instance. Apple has not laid out an exact timeframe for the rollout in other countries. Apple said that makes the Mac a great platform for developing virtual-reality "experiences", although the company didn't announce any consumer VR products. For example, the iPhone 7 launched in 30 countries simultaneously.

Apple users have been waiting a loooong time for this. Tuning HomePod for several different languages, dialects and accents is going to be quite a chore.

Available in two colors, the device itself if 6.8 inches high and 5.6 inches wide, weighing a total of 5.5 pounds. Each component has a discrete amplifier. Apple said the speakers have "spatial awareness" that adjusts the speaker's sound levels to the acoustic conditions of the particular room.
