  • Protests over Minnesota police shooting result in 18 arrests on freeway

Friday, Minnesota police officer Jeronimo Yanez was acquitted of all charges in the fatal shooting of Philando Castile, an African American man, during a traffic stop.

Minnesota State Patrol officers arrest protesters during a gathering after the verdict.

Authorities repeatedly asked protesters to leave before making 18 arrests shortly after midnight on Saturday, the statement said.

"At 1:30 a.m. Saturday, a few dozen protesters had gathered in front of the Governor's Residence, the site of a almost three-week encampment after Castile's death last summer".

Yanez, 29, was charged with second-degree manslaughter - the first time a police officer had been charged with the death of a citizen in Minnesota.

July 9: Attorney Thomas Kelly says Yanez was reacting to the presence of the gun when he opened fire on Castile. Others include, Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, La., Eric Garner, who was held in a chokehold by police, and died in NY, and Michael Brown, an unarmed teenager, who was shot by an officer in Ferguson, Mo. The Washington Post reported that the jury decision came nearly a year after Castile's death. Flowers and handmade signs have decorated the stretch of road since the killing of Castile, which in part was streamed onto Facebook live (warning: graphic content) by his girlfriend.

Earl Gray, who was representing officer Yanez, said "justice was done".

The city of St Anthony police department said Yanez will not be returning to work in the city.

About 150 people gathered in a Minneapolis park for a rally and downtown march in response to the acquittal of a police officer who shot and killed a black driver, a muted response compared to protests one night earlier. No video existed of exactly what happened inside the auto.

The death of Philando Castile was sad and according to testimony in the Yanez trial, unnecessary.

In the U.S., legal cases are usually decided by a panel of 12 people sworn to give a verdict based on evidence submitted to a court. "Sir, I have to tell you that I do have a firearm on me", he said.

She says those arrested were booked at Ramsey County Jail on charges including being a pedestrian on the busy freeway.

Black gun owners have grown more concerned about their gun rights in light of police officer Jeronimo Yanez being cleared of shooting Philando Castile. Valerie Castile denounced the unanimous jury decision and declared, "The system continues to fail black people, and it will continue to fail you all".

"This happened with Philando and when they get done they are coming for you and for you and all your interracial children, y'all are next", Valerie Castile said after Friday's verdict.
