  • TX: 4-Year-Old Girl Dies in Boat Crash

Her father - who was also there - tried to save his daughter, but his legs were severed in the process, police said Friday.

Authorities in Central Texas have charged a man with criminal negligent homicide after a 4-year-old girl was killed and her father seriously injured when they were run over by a houseboat.

His bond is set at $150,000.

"Jason Bernal stated from the captain's position in the boat he could not see behind him because the boat is three-stories tall", the papers state.

Kaitlyn was pronounced dead at Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Temple at 7:45 p.m., according to Temple Police Spokesperson Shawana Neely.

Temple police said in court papers that Bernal told an officer that he put the boat in reverse and was backing up when someone told him to stop.

Reaction to court's decision to hear redistricting case
It is a common practice for state legislatures to redraw voting districts to confer an advantage on the governing party. One factor the court weighs in making such decisions is which side seems to have a better chance of winning.

Both were taken to a hospital in serious condition. Her entire body was injured by multiple lacerations caused by the houseboat's propeller.

According to the arrest affidavit, a witness said that she told the driver of the boat not to park in this area because of the children swimming.

A witness said that she shouted at Bernal that people were behind the boat when it started to back up.

After a girl of four, Katlyn Oliver, was killed in Belton, Texas, when she was swimming in a life jacket and got caught up in the propeller of a houseboat, the houseboat's owner, Jason Stuart Bernal, 43, was arrested and charged with criminally negligent homicide, which is a felony in Texas.

A Belton, Texas, funeral home has offered to cover the cost of Kaitlyn's funeral.

Temple Police are still investigating the case.
