Tougher than ever, 90th National Spelling Bee gets underway

For them, the bee is an all-consuming, year-round pursuit.

The spellers range in age from 6 to 15 and include Edith Fuller, a 6-year-old kindergarten student from Tulsa, Okla. Edith was just 5 years old when she qualified for the national competition, making her the youngster-ever speller. In addition to Sylvie, Brainsy's coaching network boasts: Snigdha Nandipati, the 2012 champion and a Yale freshman; Cooper Komatsu, a high school freshman from Los Angeles, who placed seventh a year ago; Dev Jaiswal, who nabbed fourth place in 2015; and Amber Born, 18, a high school senior, who got fourth place in 2013. The test, completed Tuesday, is considered the bee's first round. The nonprofit foundation hosts national competitions for Indian-Americans in a variety of academic fields.

Zeigler won the Lee-Ogle-Whiteside Regional Spelling Bee on February 23.

Last year, the spelling bee ended in a tie for the third consecutive year in a row, with Jairam Hathwar and Nihar Janga declared co-champions. Beautiful, Chihuahua and hallelujah also make several appearances.

For a few years, Google Trends has been releasing a list of America's Most Misspelled Words based on the search term "how to spell" by state.

Things were different a generation ago, before the internet and before the creation of the North South Foundation and South Asian bees.

Fuller, 6, who was the Green Country Regional Spelling Bee champion, will receive her score on Wednesday.

"There wasn't this pipeline or anything like that. People here are very nice", she said. As an eighth-grader, she will not be eligible to compete next year.
