The Brexit Secretary is hoping to win round Michel Barnier over Britain's plan to guarantee the future rights of European nationals living in the United Kingdom amid deep divisions back home.
He said the leak undermined his plan to make the future of the British economy the central focus of the Brexit talks, ahead of Britain-EU immigration policies.
"We need to examine and compare our respective positions in order to make good progress", he said.
The Brexit secretary said he would be "getting into the real substance" of the separation but he might end up speaking more about unity after the chancellor, Philip Hammond, complained on Sunday that he was being briefed against by fellow ministers opposed to his pro-business approach.

Mr Davis arrived at the EU Commission's headquarters at around 9.15am and immediately held a joint press conference with Mr Barnier, at which the pair read pre-prepared statements.
Even though May had insisted that the Brexit process can't be reversed, her government will not be able to pursue the firm Brexit line she favored, following an undesired result of the June snap election, in which her party lost majority in the House of Commons. "This government is facing a ticking clock over the Brexit negotiations", Hammond said on Sunday.
Progress on citizens' rights is one of the three main issues that have to be resolved before the two sides can start talking about a wide-ranging free trade deal, the others being the bill Britain has to pay to meet existing commitments and the border issue in Ireland.
